Jean-Claude “JC” Paquette, born and raised in Ottawa, passed away on September 13, 2026, at the age of 77, leaving behind a lifetime of great friendships, laughter, adventures and more than a few stories that probably became better with every telling.

JC is survived by his wife and best friend, Sue Gervais, and by Sue’s brother, Jim Gervais, who was also one of JC’s closest and most trusted friends. Their friendship was one of the great constants in JC’s life, built over many years of laughs, good times and the kind of easy companionship that needs little explanation.

He is also survived by his stepsons, Matthew McCarthy and Ryan McCarthy, and his much-loved grandchildren, Zoe McCarthy and Daron McCarthy, who knew him simply and affectionately as “Bapa.”

JC is also survived by his brothers Marcel (Helene) and Andy, his sisters Cecile and Theresa, as well as many nieces and nephews.

For 37 years, JC shared a special friendship with his neighbours Jean and Louise Lemay, who became far more than neighbours. Their daughters, Mireille, Genevieve and Marie-Claire, all held a special place in JC’s heart and were very much a part of his extended family.

JC also remained close with his former wife, Louise Paquette, whom he visited regularly in long-term care, a reflection of the loyalty and care he continued to show to people who had been an important part of his life.

JC spent 33 years serving his hometown with the Ottawa Fire Department, retiring as a Captain in 2007. During his career, he spent a number of years working with the OFD HAZMAT team. To those who worked alongside him, however, the rank and assignments only tell part of the story. He was remembered as a hell of a guy to have around, both on and off duty, with an infectious laugh, a mischievous smile and an ability to find humour in just about anything.

JC truly enjoyed his retirement. He loved skiing, golf trips, watching hockey and, above all, the company that went along with them. He also spent many happy years enjoying retirement in Florida, where he made a wonderful circle of friends and collected plenty more good memories along the way. Whether on a ski hill, a golf course, in the Florida sunshine or around a table with friends, JC was happiest when there was good company and something to laugh about.

JC also knew how to enjoy the important things in life. A good shot of Grand Marnier was always appreciated. His homemade Caesar salad dressing was legendary, with lots of garlic of course, and his spaghetti sauce had plenty of loyal fans of its own.

In lieu of flowers, donations in JC’s memory may be made to the The Cheo Foundation.
