The family of Robert John Edgar Butler, lovingly known to all as Bob, is saddened to announce his passing on May 30, 2026, at the age of 87. Bob lived a full life having served the City of Ottawa’s Fire Service for over 40 years as a firefighter and finished his career as Executive Officer. While serving in the firefighting ranks, he had a lasting impact as President of the Ottawa Professional Fire Fighter’s Association for over 19 years leading labour negotiations to ensure fair pay and benefits for its members.

Beyond his professional life, Bob had a passion for amateur sport. He officiated amateur football at the high school, minor and university levels for close to 43 years. When not on the field, Bob was staying current with hockey, baseball and his love, football.

He will be lovingly remembered and deeply missed by his partner of 28 years, Janet Tweed, his children Diana King (nee Butler) (Blair King) and Graham Butler (Robin Deslauriers-Butler), his sister Elizabeth Conlan and brother Brian Butler, his extended family Steven Poirier and Faye Pears, Kaori and Richard Palframan and his grandchildren Kylie, Jenna, Brittany, Quinn, Crosby, Natasha and Zack.

Family and friends are invited to a visitation on Tuesday, June 9, 2026, from 5 PM to 8 PM and on Wednesday, June 10, 2026 beginning at 10 AM, followed by the Funeral Service in the Chapel at 11 AM, at Capital Funeral Home and Cemetery, 3700 Prince of Wales Dr., Nepean.  A private family interment service will be held at a later date at MacLaren cemetery in Wakefield, QC., where several of his Firefighter comrades are also buried.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to The Parkinson’s Society or the Canadian Fallen Firefighters Foundation (CFFF), which can be done by scrolling to the bottom of this page and using the “Charity Donations” button.
